The success of the Essent ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships 2009 event relies on the many dedicated volunteers from across British Columbia and Canada. Volunteering is a great way to support Canadian athletes, meet new people and gain volunteer experience for major sporting events.

Volunteers of all skill levels are needed to fill a variety of roles, including field of play, event services, transportation and customer service roles. By participating in a Sport Event, volunteers will gain valuable experience working at the venues where the 2010 Winter Games will be held. This experience will be a valuable asset when being considered for a Games-time role.

Completing your volunteer application form

If you’re interested in volunteering in the Essent ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships 2009 event, you will be asked to fill out an online Vancouver 2010 Games-time volunteer application form. When completing this application form, remember to:

• choose “yes” to Sport Events under Availability and Preferences
• select Sport – Speed Skating as one of your three preferences
• tell us as much as you can about your skills and interests under Volunteer and Work Experience

Once you’ve completed and submitted your online Vancouver 2010 Games-time volunteer application form, you will be given access to On Your Mark, a volunteer portal where you can find information and regular updates on your volunteer application and journey. Volunteers will be selected based on individual skills, experience, availability and areas of interest. Once we begin assessing volunteer applications, candidates will be selected and can expect to undergo a phone interview, security clearance, an in-person interview and training.

What to expect as a volunteer

As a volunteer, you are part of an enthusiastic team delivering an international event which will be seen by thousands of people from around the world — you’ll make new friends, gain new skills, hone existing skills and support Canadian athletes. Don’t miss this opportunity of a lifetime!

Your Sport Event Volunteer Journey
1. Application	Welcome. The first step in joining our Sport Event team is to complete a Games-time volunteer application form at vancouver2010.com. Remember to choose “yes” to Sport Events on your application form under Availability and Preferences. Sport Events are a fantastic way to build your volunteer portfolio and gain experience working at venues where the 2010 Winter Games will be held. This experience will be valuable when being considered for a Games-time role.
2. Phone Screening	We’d love to get to know you better. We’ll be contacting qualified applicants for a telephone interview to confirm your details and availability as well as get a better sense of what drives your passion. With the large number of people we have to contact, phone interviews will be held from spring 2008 to summer 2009.
3. Invitation to Creating Team 2010	An invitation to meet. After your phone screen, we’ll be sending out invitations to qualified applicants to attend Creating Team 2010. Creating Team 2010 is an inspirational, full-day session filled with information about what to expect as a volunteer and provides us with the opportunity to get to know each other better. Sessions run from July 2008 to August 2009.
4. Creating Team 2010	We’re thrilled to meet you in-person. Creating Team 2010 is full-day motivational session helping us to get to know each other better. We know you’re busy, so we’ve combined several steps of your journey into one day. Your session includes the following experiences:
a) Security Clearance	Greetings. When you arrive, we’ll invite you to complete a security clearance check.
b) In-Person Interview	This is anything but your typical interview. The interview will take up to one hour, and helps us put a face to your name. We want to fully understand your background, skills and experience.
c) Team 2010 Orientation	This fun and interactive session provides you with a range of information about working at the 2010 Winter Games and is held after your in-person interview.
5. Sport Event Job Offer	Welcome to the team! At this stage we will be offering qualified applicants a Sport Event role. You will be asked to confirm and accept your position on On Your Mark. This is an ongoing process until all positions have been filled. Your job offer will confirm your volunteer position by venue and date. 6. Scheduling	At this point, your function contact will complete your work schedule and post it on On Your Mark. You will be able to view your work schedule about 1 to 2 months prior to your assigned Sport Event. Scheduling will start in the summer of 2008.
7. Invitation to Sport Event Training/Uniform and Accreditation Distribution	Approximately 1 month prior to your assigned Sport Event, you’ll receive an invitation to attend a Sport Event volunteer training session as well as information on where to pick-up up your uniform and accreditation. You’ll be able to view this information on On Your Mark.
8. Sport Event Training/Uniform and Accreditation Distribution	Helping you put your best foot forward. Before the start of the Sport Event competition date, you’ll receive general event orientation and job-specific training. You’ll also have an opportunity to pickup your accreditation and uniform so you can dress the part.
9. Sport Event Time	It’s time to inspire the world. Your commitment as a volunteer comes full-circle as you complete all scheduled shifts throughout the Sport Event period. Take it all in! This is an experience we’re sure you’ll never forget.
10. Post-Sport Event	It’s time to relax and relish in the experience you’ve had as part of the volunteer team. Now imagine what it will be like during the 2010 Winter Games...
